2008 INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY
"Of all the careers open to women, nursing offers the most opportunities."

On May 12, nurses and nurse supporters across the globe celebrated International Nurses Day.

This day is celebrated to remember all of the valuable contributions nurses make to society. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965. In January 1974, the decision was made to celebrate the day on May 12 as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.

We honor and commend our nurses, hospital staff members and healthcare professionals including Nursing Management.

Humble and proud
This day is to honor our  nurses, and also to remind nurses to BE HUMBLE, to serve —not for reward or recognition — but because of a sense of commitment. That's the kind of humility we need — a humility that enables us to work without  demanding recognition.

WHY A HUMBLE BEE?

Humble Bee
Humble Bee’s a gentle, social, and beneficial to humans.  They are one of nature’s most industrious and harmless workers.  Humble Bee’s do not attack, unless it is a life threatening situation.  That is the way Nurses should be, harmless, gentle, hard working, and humble – like a Bumble Bee.

By promoting our SA nurses we hope that young people would once again see nursing as a great profession to get in to.

Humble...And Proud of It!

It seems that one of the basic teachings of scripture is totally out of touch with the values of our modern culture. "For example, He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8) We would be taking a chance if we put this verse up for a vote today. Who wants to walk humbly? Another example: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." (Matt 5:5)

According to the Bible there is something good about being humble. There is something noble about being meek. Even though such attributes are out of style in our current culture, the scriptures praise these qualities. Being humble doesn't mean being submissive! Being meek doesn't mean being weak. In a sense, Rap star Ice-T is right, people do need pride. That is, they need healthy self-esteem that allows them to stand up for themselves & for their convictions & motivate them to give their best.Let's look at the kind of humility that is a Christian virtue.

So, what do we mean by humility? What is a humble person like? Being humble doesn't mean you think less of yourself, it means you think of yourself less. Dr. Barry L. Kolb

Spoil a Nurse and you also help to support a disabled or unemployed person

Less number of schools can be a foremost factor. There are not many schools that run programs to make future nurses.

Adding to the plight is the fact that the schools that exist are in an awful condition. There is not just lack of funds, laboratories and clinical equipments here but the faculty too is not enough and well qualified. These issues preclude many people from entering into this profession. While those who enter the program confront problems at all stages and at times end up giving it up or leaving it in the middle.

The age factor is another drawback. The average age for the registered nurses is significantly high. So, the moment these registered nurses retire, there occurs an acute shortage of new ones.

No appropriate measures are taken to train new nurses. Even the hospitals that take up this task are reluctant to spend good amount on training nurses. The medical and other facilities are very poor. This entails reluctance on the part of individuals to seek employment as a nurse.

Novel and advanced courses- many new and advanced courses like MBA, Mass Communication and so forth are picking pace these days. They are usually equipped with best facilities and funds and are seen fetching rich jobs. So more guys and gals are willing to make a wealthy career via such courses.

The restricted scope for growth, relatively low salary structure and tremendous workload are also the debarring features. The job of a nurse is deemed to be quite a stressful job nowadays, that requires prolonged working even at odd hours.

It is my duty
Dawn Butler, RN

I walk through those doors with pride,
Who's life will i save tonight?
Someone is waiting for me,
Someone is alive today because of my duty.
Sometimes we cry cause we can't save them all,
God sometimes won't let us interfere when he calls.
A baby's first breath when he looks at me,
The joy of my first delivery.
The tear i wipe a way with my own hands,
The life ending of a gentle old man.
The night seems so dark and the morning so bright.
Being a nurse you see life in a different light.
Who will i save tonight?
Who will hold my hand during their last breath with no fright?
Who will enter this world on my shift?
How many mothers will greet their babies with a kiss?
I don't know who these special people are
but i will meet them with every call
I will hold them tight and help the pain
I will hold them up when they feel faint.
I will be strong when i am needed
That is my job, I am a nurse..that is my duty.

Nurse Bloggers

shrimplate, at 9:24 AM Everybody makes mistakes. Under pressure-cooker staffing conditions which are now rather the norm, this can be expected.

What amazes me is the relatively tiny number of nursing errors made, and how inconsequential these tend to be.
Nursing mistakes, as opposed to mistakes made in the general population, tend to be rather benign because we have a strong system of checks and balences.

ERRN, at 10:53 AM Thanks for this post and these comments...It is scary when a mistake is made even if it non life-threatening. Learning to keep your head up in a non-forgiving milieu is even more difficult

Attempting to be Humble and Gracious, at 3:18 PM

Being humble and gracious helps in preventing mistakes I find. I made a mistake in transcribing a Vanco dose. The nurse I worked with tore me to shreds (followed by hours of silent treatment). It acutally did no harm and the Vanco levels are theraputic (not an excuse). The next day the same nurse was found to make a similar mistake. She was so 'horrified' at my mistake that she didn't pay attention and made one of her own.

BEING a Nurse Means
Sent in by Vanessa Kell, Home Health RN

You will never be bored
You will always be frustrated
You will be surrounded by challenges.

So much to do and so little time
You will carry immense responsibility
And limited authority.
You will step into people's lives
And you will make a difference.
Some will bless you,
Some will curse you.

You will see people at their worst
And at their best.
You will never cease to be amazed
At people's capacity for
Love, courage, and endurance.

You will experience resounding triumphs
And devastating failures.
You will cry a lot.
You will laugh a lot.

You will know what it is to be human
And to be humane.

Nurses perhaps the best friend of a patient. Though they get paid for their job, yet the care and concern they exhibit for the patient is unparalleled and remarkable. The nursing territory generally belongs to females. But even men like women can take up this profession after adequate training. However, since past few years a decline is seen in the number of people taking up nursing as a career.

"Nursing, has always been a service to mankind in preventing illness, supporting those in need and giving care to others. It involves the giving of intimate personal care at times of stress - at the edges of life and death - to the hurt, the maimed and the vulnerable. It calls for personal attributes, for the development of professional values and attitudes as well as a firm foundation of knowledge and understanding of mankind." Sylvia Anne Lombard, nursing service manager.

May 12, 2005 -- In South Africa, Xoliswa Zulu, a reporter for The Mercury, tried to follow nurses around on a 12-hour shift at a busy city hospital--but appeared to become overwhelmed with exhaustion (and appreciation) less than half way through the shift. more...

Developing a Competence Framework and Evaluation Tool for Primary Care Nursing in South Africa

Nurses provide the bulk of primary care services in South Africa. Post-apartheid health legislation envisions the provision of comprehensive primary services at all public clinics, which implies the need for a cadre of primary care nurses able to render such services. The objective of this study was to identify core competencies of clinic nurses and develop an evaluation tool for primary care nursing in South Africa

19/07/2006 - Nursing crisis: A concerted effort is required

The impending critical shortage of nurses in South Africa has recently been in the spotlight again, with statistics indicating that 34 965 (18,4%) of the country’s 190 449 nurses (as per the South African Nursing Council (SANC) register) no longer practise their profession – at least not within the hospital infrastructure. The majority of excellent nurses are leaving for greener pastures posing a threat to health care delivery. South Africa is "steadily losing" its best trained nurses, especially in rural areas, even as the growing population and expected increases in communicable diseases will mean a greater demand for skilled carea steady decline in nursing school enrollments is leading to a growing nursing shortage in South Africa. The Nursing Shortage

A nurse—whether working in a family clinic or large hospital—is responsible for a majority of patient care. Nurses perform some of the most important duties during a patient’s stay at the hospital, from monitoring vital signs to administering necessary medications. Nurses also provide a human face to what can sometimes be a cold, sterile environment. However, in recent years there has been a vast shortage of nurses in the healthcare industry. In fact, this shortage is expected to increase dramatically over the next few years. Read more: http://www.nursingshortageinfo.com
