1986 I did not want to be a nurse. I wanted to be an Artist. But in those years, art was just not a career to follow, my parents insisted I get "something behind my name". Today, I am greatful for the knowledge.
My nursing career started aged nineteen, residing in Sunnyside, where I lived for most of my adult life. Once a quiet retirement village, twenty years later, Sunnyside turned into a black hole and became Pretoria's 24 hour Red Light district, a second Hillbrow. At night, street children, under aged prostitutes and young drug addicts, crawled out of dark holes. For a period of time we shared our home whilst making a study of their behavior. Today we still care about them, and are unable to put this valuable experience behind us. It has become our vision to educate and shelter them, to provide a place called 'home', where they can find joy, peace and happiness. |
