September 2005 Baby J was only four months old when her father died and one year old, when admitted to hospital with heart failure. Scheduled for heart surgery to fix the hole in her heart, May 2006, we both dreaded and looked forward to the operation. Once in ICU the baby girl was unconscious, tied up, pipes and tubes everywhere, she looked so tiny. The young mother nearly fainted when she saw her child the first time after the operation, un-prepared for what was to come. Powerless to help - as I was, she stood there with her hands over her face.
It has been 20 years since I last worked as a nurse in a hospital. Although I can not remember all of it now, I would like to apologize if ever I was rude to patients and their visitors during my time of training, and after I qualified. If ever I treated you like an idiot at my mercy, I apologize. I now realize that the last thing family members need, is Hospital staff to bad mouth you, when all you feel is concern. A smile and a comforting word from any one in charge would have certainly helped to keep some fears at bay. If you are a Nurse- and you hate your job - resign, you are doing more harm than good. If you love your job and think you are the greatest – plug in to God, you’ll feel small again.
Baby J before we knew she was very ill. She had a very fast heart beat and was sweating excessively. but because of her pleasant nature we could never even think of her as being sick.
Baby J. One year after the operation. healthy and happy.
