Twilight Children

YOUNG WORLD EDUCARE was registered in desperation to help the twighlight children that everyone knew about, but no one really noticed. By addressing the fate of streetkids, I became totally immersed to their problems. What makes an otherwise sane woman do something like this? I do not know the answer. A French writer once said that one's life has value so long as one attributes value to the life of others by means of love, friendship, indignation and compassion. Maybe I stretch the meaning of this to its very limits, trying to make a difference in a world that doesn't seem to even want to acknowledge the streetkids. I do not remember taking care of the street kids, as good days, most of the time I felt completely overwhelmed. Some days were diamonds, most days were stone. No gold. Those who knew me, called me 'Mother Theresa -without -a -plan.' The truth is, I was just being me – and stupid enough to think I could make a difference. It took many years to realize that "I" was not the answer to the streetkids problem. The only difference we can make is to introduce the streetkids to Christ. We were never meant to make the changes, Jesus will, all we have to do is to plant the seed of hope. The streetkids taught me about a different life, and I’m not ungrateful for the lessons. My gratitude can not be measured, as this experience helped me to find the most valuable thing there is to be found - our Heavenly Father.

YOUNG WORLD was registered in 2000. Eight years has passed. For so long I did not tell the World about the streetkids, because they were underage, and could be exploited, and when the media did find them, they were ridiculed, used and even more abused. I learned what street kids already knew -No one can be trusted. Some of the streetkids you'll meet here have children of their own now. The boys are working all over South Africa, one girl is working abroad. I am very proud of her. Many of them did not do so well. Some tried to commit suicide, one succeded, a few tested HIV positive, many are still using all kinds of drugs. There are young Mothers working as prostitutes, and young men as sex slaves for survival. All of them are much older now, the youngest recently turned eightteen, but not much else has changed for many of them. The streetkids have grown accustomed to a certain way of life, it is doubtful that they will be able to change their way of thinking on their own, they still need help. From time to time my twilight children phone home like any other young adult who struggles to make their mark in this world. Today, I still preach, and teach, and warn them and pray for my kids of the street - I love them, as if they were my very own, I want only the best for them.
